George Robert Jebb (1838-1927): Railway and Canal Engineer

Abstract: This review of the life and times of George Jebb discusses the background and some detail concerning his various canal and railway projects. It also presents previously unrecorded information on his personal life, his family and outside interests. Jebb initially trained and worked as a railway engineer but he subsequently also distinguished himself as Chief Engineer and Director with the Shropshire Union Railway and Canal Company and with the Birmingham Canal Navigations. Both these companies had close links with the London and North Western Railway Company. He was involved with extensive, innovative work at the Ellesmere Port docks and was appointed a Commissioner of the Upper Mersey Navigation Commission. His work in the Birmingham area involved extensive maintenance and modernisation of canals, pumping stations, bridges and warehouses. Jebb made important contributions to the Royal Society of Arts, the British Science Association and to the Royal Commission on Canals and Waterways. He served on the Council of the Institution of Civil Engineers as its vice-president from 1912 to 1915. He was also a member of the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers and its President in 1912. In addition, he acted as a consulting engineer and arbitrator. His outside interests included mountaineering and he contributed papers on the flora of North Wales.
