2025: Launching the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal Water Replenishment Project

The 2025 water replenishment plan will continue until the end of June, utilizing the northern section of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal north of the Yellow River as the main connecting route. The north route starts from Dongbianmen in Beijing, passing through Tonghui River and Beiyun River to reach Sanchahekou in Tianjin. The southern route begins at the outlet gate of the Yellow River Crossing Project in Liaocheng City, Shandong Province, passing through Xiaoyun River, Weiyun River, and Nanyun River to reach Sanchahekou in Tianjin. The project spans four provinces and municipalities—Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and Shandong, flowing through eight prefecture-level administrative regions and 31 county-level administrative regions. By optimizing the allocation and scheduling of water resources, including supplies from the Phase I Northern Extension of the Eastern Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion, local water sources from Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and Shandong, Yellow River diversion water, Luanhe River diversion water, recycled water, rainwater, and floodwater—the project is expected to provide 556 million cubic meters of water replenishment. Of this, 529 million cubic meters will flow into the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. The total length of the replenishment route is 1,274 kilometers, and it will replace deep groundwater irritation over an area of 460,000 mu(approximately 30,667 hectares) . Building on the existing year-round water flow in the southern section of the Grand Canal (south of the Yellow River), the plan aims to achieve full water connectivity across the entire Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and maintain water flow throughout as much as possible. Additionally, it seeks to stabilize or raise groundwater levels around replenished river channels and restore and improve aquatic ecosystems.
