Comprehensive Japanese media reported that JR East Sendai Branch stated that on the evening of April 1st, at about 10:20 pm, a Shinkansen train from Tokyo to Morioka entered the station with overspeed. It stopped more than 20 meters past the original parking position. In order to return the train to its original parking position, the train was delayed by 90 seconds. It is reported that when the train entered station, it did not decelerate and stop but maintain high-speed driving. The train finally stopped after launching emergency brake.
The 43-year-old driver, who had six years of driving experience claimed when he was investigated initially that he mistakenly regarded the 250-meter-long train for another 400-meter-long train, resulting to the train stopping in the wrong position. However, due to doubts, JR East Sendai branch once again confirmed to him, he admitted that he accidentally fell asleep before the train arrived. It is estimated that the train has traveled more than 10 kilometers when the driver was asleep.
